Rainbow Mountain — known locally as Vinicunca or Montaña de 7 Colores — has become one of the most photographed excursions near Cusco, and for good reason: its naturally striped, multicolored slopes are unlike anything else in the region. Here’s what an actual day on this tour looks like.

Quick Facts

  • Price: $65 USD per person (full-day, shared group service)
  • Duration: Full day, approximately 12-13 hours round trip from Cusco
  • Difficulty: Moderate — a 1.5-hour uphill hike (or horse ride) at high altitude
  • Starting point: Cusipata / Paucarpata, about 2 hours from Cusco by private bus

Itinerary

Pickup from your hotel happens early, between 4:00 and 4:30 am. After a roughly 2-hour drive, the group stops in Cusipata (3,310 masl) for breakfast before continuing to Llaqto, where the trailhead and checkpoint are located.

From Llaqto, it’s a 1.5-hour walk to the viewpoint of Vinicunca. If you’d rather not walk the whole way, renting a horse for part of the route is optional. Along the trail you’ll pass through high-Andean scenery and are likely to spot llamas and alpacas grazing.

At the viewpoint, your guide explains the geology behind the mountain’s colors — a result of mineral-rich sedimentary layers exposed over millions of years — before you have free time to take photos. The group then descends back to Llaqto, returns by bus to Cusipata for a buffet lunch, and heads back to Cusco, arriving around 4:00-5:00 pm.

A Note on Altitude

The Vinicunca viewpoint sits above 5,000 meters, making this one of the highest-altitude excursions we offer. If it’s your first day or two in Cusco, expect the hike to feel more demanding than it would after acclimatizing. We recommend spending at least one full day in Cusco before this tour — see our guide to preventing altitude sickness for more tips, including what to eat, drink, and pack.

Cusco sits at roughly 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) above sea level, and several of our excursions climb even higher — Rainbow Mountain reaches over 5,000 meters and Humantay Lake sits at 4,200 meters. Altitude sickness, known locally as soroche, is common among travelers arriving from lower elevations. It’s rarely dangerous if you take a few precautions, but it can ruin a tour day if ignored.

What Causes It

At higher elevations there’s less oxygen in the air. Your body needs time to adjust — usually 24 to 48 hours — by producing more red blood cells and breathing more deeply. Symptoms typically appear within a few hours of arrival and include headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, and difficulty sleeping.

Before You Arrive

  • If your schedule allows, arrive in Cusco 1-2 days before any high-altitude excursion (Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, Ausangate). This is the single most effective thing you can do.
  • Stay hydrated in the days leading up to your trip and avoid heavy alcohol consumption the night before flying in.
  • Talk to your doctor about altitude sickness medication (such as acetazolamide) if you have a history of severe symptoms.

Once You’re in Cusco

  • Take it easy on day one. Avoid strenuous activity, alcohol, and heavy meals for the first 24 hours.
  • Drink plenty of water — more than you think you need. Avoid excessive caffeine.
  • Try mate de coca (coca leaf tea), a traditional remedy widely available in hotels and restaurants across Cusco.
  • Eat light meals and prioritize carbohydrates over heavy, fatty food.
  • Consider “soroche pills” (over-the-counter altitude sickness tablets), sold at most pharmacies in Cusco.

On the Day of a High-Altitude Tour

Several of our excursions — Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, and the 7 Lagunas Ausangate tour — include an oxygen tank and first aid kit with the guide as a standard precaution. If you start to feel unwell during a hike, tell your guide immediately: slowing down, resting, and sipping water is usually enough. On tours where walking is optional (like Rainbow Mountain), horses are available for part of the route.

When to Be Concerned

Mild symptoms (headache, tiredness) are normal and usually pass within a day or two. Severe symptoms — confusion, difficulty walking in a straight line, or shortness of breath at rest — are signs of more serious altitude illness and require descending to a lower elevation and seeking medical attention.

With a bit of planning, altitude shouldn’t stop you from enjoying Cusco’s best excursions. If you’re unsure which tours are more demanding, check out our guide to day tours from Cusco or get in touch and we’ll help you plan an itinerary that eases you into the altitude.

Cusco is the gateway to Machu Picchu, but the region around the city is packed with excursions you can complete in a single day — no multi-day trek required. Whether you have one free day or a whole week, here are the day tours we run most often, with real pricing and what to expect on each one.

1. Sacred Valley of the Incas (Full Day) — $65

Our most complete introduction to the region. You’ll visit the Pisac ruins and its traditional market, have a buffet lunch in Urubamba, explore the fortress of Ollantaytambo, and finish in Chinchero, known for its Inca textile traditions. Pickup is around 7:30 am and includes a bilingual guide, transport, and entrance tickets.

2. Maras, Moray & Salineras Full Day — $65

A shorter loop through three unique sites: Chinchero’s textile center, the circular agricultural terraces of Moray, and the more than 3,000 salt pools of Salineras de Maras, still worked by local families today. Back in Cusco by early afternoon.

3. Rainbow Mountain (Montaña de 7 Colores) — $65

An early start (around 4:00–4:30 am) for the multicolored slopes of Vinicunca at over 5,000 meters. Includes breakfast, a buffet lunch, oxygen support, and the 1.5-hour hike to the viewpoint (horses available for those who prefer not to walk the full stretch). Read our full Rainbow Mountain guide for altitude tips before booking.

4. Humantay Lake Full Day — $65

A turquoise glacial lake at 4,200 meters near Mount Salkantay. This is one of the more physically demanding day tours on this list, so we recommend spending at least one full day in Cusco beforehand to acclimatize.

5. Cusco City Tour (Half Day) — $35

Perfect for your first day in the city. Visit Qoricancha (the Inca Temple of the Sun), then head up to Sacsayhuamán, Qenqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay — five archaeological sites within a short drive of the historic center.

6. ATV Tour: Maras, Moray & Salineras — $50

The same highlights as the classic Maras-Moray tour, but on your own quad bike, with a short practice session before setting off. Includes safety gear and a bilingual guide.

7. Waqrapukara Full Day — $65

An off-the-beaten-path archaeological site reached after an 8 km hike through high-Andean scenery, starting from the community of Pitumarca. A great pick if you’ve already done the classic circuits and want something quieter.

Planning Your Cusco Itinerary

If you’re staying for 4-5 days, we usually suggest starting with the Cusco City Tour to acclimatize, followed by the Sacred Valley, then saving the higher-altitude excursions (Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lake) for once you’re feeling settled. All of the tours above include hotel pickup in Cusco and a professional bilingual guide.
